Sunset Blvd brings an awesome new rendition to the stage this fall and critics are all raving about it. “Lloyd brings hipster edginess, style and unpredictability to this revival of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical,” said The Guardian. The review also raved about Webber’s fantastic score, “There is great vocal power to the songs, including the titular number, Sunset Boulevard, by Joe, as well as New Ways to Dream and As If We Never Said Goodbye by Norma. The pace is slowed down for the songs and verges on inert, while the radicalism of Lloyd’s staging butts up against Lloyd Webber’s far less radical score.”
Over at Variety, the musica is deemed as the next best thing after Webber’s last masterpiece, “Andrew Lloyd Webber’s finest dramatic moment since the chandelier first dropped in “The Phantom of the Opera.” Sunset Blvd continued to receive praises in the article, “Though the musical may be 30 years old, his production’s undeniably exciting obsession with tech and visuals is a cleverly 21st century take.” Lastly, the Glossary Magazine said, “This revival may just be his (Webber’s) biggest triumph yet. That’s largely thanks to a spellbinding performance from the show’s leading lady, Nicole Scherzinger.”
“Dark and glittering as black diamonds. As lean and lethal as a stilleto.” – The Stage
